A group of farmers and wine makers from Germany established Anaheim in 1857. A wave of pestilence destroyed the crops in 1880 and the farmers turned their focus to growing lemons, oranges, walnuts and other produce. The railroad came to Anaheim, Ca. in 1886, allowing producers to sell the fruits and vegetables by shipping to other regions. The city remained largely a farming community until Disneyland opened the gates to its theme park in 1955.
